PSA Distribution & Tree Adoption!

For the last couple of weeks we have been distributing PSAs (Public Service Announcements) to outdoor movie presenters to play prior to their movie screenings. These PSAs were created by Green Teens around the city of New York! Keep your eye out at these movies and see if you like these short clips! We would love your feedback!

On another note Summer is a great time to help out your community and adopt a tree in your area! Through MillionTreesNYC, (http://www.milliontreesnyc.org) an initiative set up under Mayor Bloomberg to increase the tree population in NYC, you can adopt your own tree and take care of it! Trees need us as much as we need them! Visit the MillionTreesNYC website and adopt your tree today!

On Monday July 16th, 2012 the Design Workshop commenced their summer session with a brief overview of the program and a couple of great site visits!

The first site visit was to the NYC Pavilion in Flushing Meadow Corona Park(pictured above). This site was the former location of the 1939 & 1964 World's Fair. The members of the Design Workshop were given a brief tour of the structure by John Krawchuk, the Director of Historic Preservation for the Park Department (pictured above). The discussion on site included a history of the structure, the surrounding buildings as well as a history of the World's Fair.

The City of New York is looking for innovated ideas on how to restore this site and bring this location back to it's former glory. To learn more check out http://www.newyorkstatepavilion.org/revivenewyorkstate.pdf
Several of the structures built for the World's Fair are still in use today however the Pavilion & the three Observation Towers are closed to the public.

The second site visit took the Green Teens participating in the Design Workshop to PS 1, a satellite location of the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA). The Design workshop took this tour to examine Wendy by Matthias Hollwich and Marc Kushnew (HWKN) winners of the Young Archutects Program (YAP) in New York. Wendy is an inexpensive, environmentally conscious piece that will be used throughout the summer to clean the air in PS1 (equivalent to taking 260 cars off the road in NYC) and will be used as a cool down and aesthetic addition to the Warm Up music series. What We Learned from
Glen Nison,
NYC Department of Sanitation!

1. We need to recycle more and waste less!
2. We should recycle glass bottles and jars but not other glass material like mirrors and windows!
3. If it is at least 50% metal it can and should be recycled!
4. Most paper can be recycled. Paper that can not be recycled includes any soiled material, hard covered books and soft paper (for example napkins and tissues)
5. If you need more information call 311 or go to www.nyc.gov/recycle

Daily Post
Do you know what you should do if you see an injured animal in a park?
The best course of action is to leave the animal alone and alert a Park Ranger to the location, size and type of the animal so they can help!
Make sure not to touch any foreign animal to maintain your safety and theirs!

Happy First Day of Summer!
A friendly reminder that for the next couple of days there is going to be a heat wave!
Most of the East Coast, including all of New York City, will reach temperatures in the nineties Fahrenheit!
Make sure to hydrate, stay cool, be safe & think of visiting a local pool for some heat relief!

Below is a fun question to keep your mind off the heat!
Can you name the five largest parks in New York City?
I’ll give you a hint, Central Park, Manhattan is # 5!
To find out the answer and more cool facts about NYC parks go to this link http://www.nycgovparks.org/about/faq#aboutParks

Green Teen Competition - Building Soapbox Car

Hello everyone.  I hope you all had a great weekend.

Spring is here, and our Green Teens program is in full swing here in Queens.  I would like to thank the Green Teens who came out to help with the clean-up project at the Forest Park Bandshell for all their hard work.

I wanted to share with you all the opportunity to participate in a Soapbox Derby competition.  Queens Green Teens was invited to build a Soapbox Car to use in a competition taking place on April 28th, 2012 in Manhattan.  We are looking for dedicated youth to help us design and build a soapbox car under the guidance of one of our Green Teens Coordinators.  If you are interested, feel free to email me at Jostin.Rodriguez@parks.nyc.gov and we will forward you the specifics.

Lastly, we are looking to organize weekly projects in specific sections of Queens.  If you are interested in volunteering on a weekly basis, email me at Jostin.Rodriguez@parks.nyc.gov with "Looking to Volunteer weekly" in the email title, so bringing you together by neighborhood to help beautify our parkslands.

I look forward to hearing from you soon.

Have a great week everyone!

Calling All Green Teens! Forest Park clean-up event this Saturday

Good morning Green Teens.  I hope you all have had a great weekend.

I wanted to let you all know that there is a great opportunity to get in some volunteer hours.  Parks Supervisors Gavin and McMorrow are inviting Green Teens down for a clean-up at Forest Park.  The Clean-up effort is scheduled for this Saturday, March 24th  from 10am – 12pm at the Bandshell, located inside Forest Park (the Bandshell is where they usually host concerts at the park).   The closest entrance to that area is at the corner of Woodhaven Boulevard & Forest Park Drive.  They are looking for volunteers to assist with raking and collecting leaves in and around the Bandshell and seating area.

If you are interested in joining the effort this Saturday,  email me by Thursday March 22nd at Jostin.Rodriguez@parks.nyc.gov.   As I receive the replies,  I will send out the Green Teens Registration form (which Park Supervisors Gavin and McMorrow will be collecting) and the volunteer hours sheet form that you can use and have them sign to verify your volunteer hours.  I’ll be collecting responses to let them know how many volunteers are coming.

We are also currently working on laying our volunteer projects from now through May.  If you are in need of volunteer hours and are looking for a venue to get them, do not hesitate to email me at my email address above.

I hope to hear from you soon. Take care, and enjoy the warm weather.
